VIETNAM INDIA UNDERWATER | Valentine's Sharpnose Puffer
Canthigaster valentini
The cute "Valentine's Sharpnose puffer" is a toxic pufferfish, commonly found in reef waters. It is also known as the "Black Saddle Tobi" and its characteristic colour pattern is mimicked by a small "saddle-like look." Males are territorial and usually have a harem of up to 7 females which they constantly guard from other males.
The Mimic Filefish (Paraluteres Prionorus) mimics the colour pattern of the Valentine's Sharpnose puffer, convincing predators that he is also poisonous and thereby evading predation. This is a vibrant example of Batesian Mimicry.
